Commonly, the parents of either the man or the woman initiate the marriage proposal. However, when it comes to Sayeda Fatima(sa) and Imam Ali, their marriage was ordered by Allah - something that didn't happen before in human history! It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik that he said: "I was with the Prophet when he was overcome with a revelation. When he awoke from it, he said: 'O' Anas, do you know what Jibreel just informed me on behalf of the Lord?' I said: Our Lord and you are more knowing of the answer. He said: 'My Lord ordered me to marry Fatima(sa) to Ali(as) When the Prophet(saww)presented the offer to Imam Ali(as), the Imam accepted and prostrated to Allah, thanking Him" . In another hadith, Prophet Muhammad told Imam Ali(as) "O' Ali, Jibreel told me that Allah has married you to Fatima(sa)where 40,000 angels witnessed the marriage. Allah then ordered the tree of Touba to grow jewels and ruby, so the tree grew those minerals and the Hur al-Ayn gift these minerals to each other until the day of judgment, telling each other: 'This is a gift from the best of women'. In another narration narrated by al-Thahaq Ibn Mazahim, the Prophet(saww)took Imam Ali(as)and sat him beside Sayeda Fatima(sa) and said: "O' Lord, these two are the most beloved individuals to me, so Love them, and bless their progeny, and protect them, and save them and their progeny from the temptations of Shaytan". As the second narration mentions, the angels and residents of paradise were all excited with the marriage between Amir al-Momineen and Sayeda Fatima(sa) It was narrated that an angel named Raheel gave a very eloquent speech when the two married. He said: "Praise to the Lord who was here first before anyone else, and praise to Him who will remain after every creature will cease to exist. Praise to the Lord that made us angels as disciples, and to His divinity we are obedient. We are thankful to Him for what He blessed us with, and created us free from sin, and free from flaws. We thank Him for residing us in His heavens and gardens, and for removing desires from our souls, and made our only desire to praise and glorify Him". He continued to praise Allah until he said: "Our all powerful King has picked for the mistress of all women, the daughter of the seal of the prophets and the master of the messengers and the leader of the righteous, to his his brother and successor from his family, the one who answers his orders, and follows his commands, Ali". Then Allah (swt) said: "I have married them, so bear witness to that O' My angels". In the marriage ceremony, Imam Amir al-Momineen (as) stood up and gave an eloquent speech where he praised Allah and talked about the importance of marriage. In terms of the mahr, like Sayeda Khadija (as), it was low. There are differences of narrations of what exactly was her mahr, for example we have a hadith that mention the mahr was 500 dirhams, while we have others that mention only 30 dirhams , I heard from Sayed Muhammad Ridha al-Shirazi that the different narrations could indicate the differences between the value of currency - for example, the value of the American and Australian dollar differs even though they use the same currency. Therefore, the narrations could point to the same value, but just used different currencies to illustrate the point. However, that was the materialistic mahr, Sayeda Fatima (as) also had a spiritual mahr. It was narrated that Imam al-Sadeq (as) said: "Allah (swt) gave 1/4th of the world as mahr to Fatima (as), He also gave her Heaven and Hell as mahr so she could throw her enemies to hell and take her shia to heaven . 1 - Kashf al-Ghuma, volume 1, page 348 2 - Manaqib Aal Abu Taleb, volume 3, page 345 3 - Ameili al-Tusi, page 39 4 - Mustadrak al-Wasail, volume 14, page 209 5 - Manaqib Aal Abu Taleb, volume 3, page 350 6 - Ibid 7 - al-Kafi, volume 5, page 377 8 - Ameili al-Tusi, page 686 Insha'Allah the next post will give a short summary of Sayeda Fatima's (as)
